Statements

Statement:

  • A declarative sentence or assertion.
  • Either true or false.
  • NOT both true and false.

So, every statement has a truth value \(T\) (true) or \(F\) (false).

Notation:

  • \(P, Q, R, \dots\)
  • \(P_1, P_2, P_3, \dots\) Remember, these are sentences!

Open Sentence: An open sentence is one whose truth value depends on one or more variables [placeholders].

Notation: \(P(x), Q(x), \dots\)
